Early in my career, I was offered an opportunity to work at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs—a role I turned down without much thought. Today, I count it as one of my few career regrets.

Back then, my decision was shaped by stories from peers posted to the Ministry to do their National Service. Since our offices were close, we often met to share experiences, and their tales made the place seem far from appealing.

If only I had known then what I know now—how that decision could have led to a career as a diplomat, working across different countries, and offering my children the unique benefits of growing up in diplomatic circles. Perhaps my friends had bad managers, or maybe they exaggerated. Regardless, I now realize the mistake of basing such an important decision solely on hearsay.

In hindsight, I should have researched and sought a broader perspective. Still, life has twists, and perhaps I ended up on the right path after all. I’ve enjoyed the journey, and we can only wonder about the road not taken.
