On my return after completing my postgraduate program, I embarked on the challenging task of job hunting, having left the job market after my first two years of working of working life. Like many, I partly believed that landing a rewarding job required knowing someone influential who could increase my chances with potential employers.

I began circulating my CV through my influential senior cousin’s extensive network. He was a prominent figure in corporate Ghana, and I was hopeful that his connections would open doors for me quickly. However, inwardly, I also desired to land a job on my own, irrespective of its nature and status, as staying with my cousin taught me to be independent and responsible for my actions, life, and future. Despite my hopes, the traction from his network was not as fruitful as I had anticipated.

Simultaneously, I actively sent out applications through my own network and to every organization I dreamed of working for. Through determination and relentless effort, I secured a job.

Interestingly, a friend I had previously worked with and stayed in contact with upon my return suggested I apply for a job her firm had advertised for a client. I applied, and instead of passing me on to the client, the recruiting firm hired me instead.

Take away:

· Relying solely on who you know does not always yield results.

· Most jobs, especially in the private sector, are based on individual efforts.

· Relentless effort, perseverance, and determination can open doors.

· Trust in your abilities and qualifications.

· Self-belief enables you to make moves and justify yourself.

· Job opportunities can come from unexpected connections.

· Trust and leverage your personal connections.

· Embrace Unconventional Paths, Sometimes, the right job finds you in surprising ways.
